What the work involves

Helping people with the everyday jobs they never get round to. Most visits are 2 hours, and you'll usually see the same customers each week, so you get to know them.

  • Around the house

Cleaning, tidying, laundry, ironing, changing beds and sorting out cupboards and spare rooms.

  • Shopping and errands

The weekly shop, prescription and parcel collections, and trips to the post office.

  • Pets and gardens

Dog walks, pet visits, mowing, weeding and keeping gardens tidy.

  • Company and outings

A cuppa and a chat, and going along to appointments or the shops.

You won't be asked to give personal care such as washing, dressing or medication.

What you need

Being kind and reliable matters far more than experience. We'll help you sort out the checks before your first job.

About you

  • You're 18 or over and live in or near Teesside
  • You're friendly, patient and turn up when you say you will
  • You can work at least a few hours a week
  • A car helps, but plenty of jobs are walkable or on a bus route

Before your first job

  • An Enhanced DBS check. We'll talk you through applying.
  • Your own public liability insurance, usually around £6 a month
  • Two references, photo ID and proof you can work in the UK
  • Registration with HMRC as self-employed, if you aren't already

Questions helpers ask

Am I employed by Home Assist Teesside?

No. You're self-employed. You choose which jobs to take and when you're available, you invoice us for the work you've done, and you pay your own tax and National Insurance.

How and when do I get paid?

Send us an invoice each week listing your visits, and we pay it by bank transfer within 7 days. We'll give you a simple invoice template.

Do I need experience?

No. If you keep your own home tidy, can follow a shopping list and enjoy a chat, you can do this. You'll shadow a visit before your first job on your own.

How many hours can I get?

As many or as few as you want, depending on the customers near you. Tell us when you're free and we'll offer you jobs in those times.

Does it cost anything to join?

We never charge you to join or to find you work. The only costs are your own DBS check and insurance, which you'll need as a self-employed helper anyway.

Can I do this alongside another job?

Yes. Lots of the work fits around school runs, shifts or studying.
